MY NAME IS … tells a story of all times, of people fleeing their homes and seeking refuge in other countries. With stories from the past and the present, from Jewish and Syrian cultures, inspired by the last paintings of Else Berg and Mommie Schwarz.
“Moving, impressive, intimate music, beautiful images” were some of the audiences reactions on the performance during the Opera Days.
The conspiracy of silence
One of the motives for making this production was, and still is, the lack of historical awareness and the looking away in the current refugee problem; the conspiracy of silence. A term also used for the silence that Jewish children encountered after the war.
The difficulty for refugees to ground in a new culture, the displacement and the violence they have experienced, are the main theme of the performance. In the two interwoven storylines of a hiding Jewish girl and a Syrian refugee, the major themes of racism and discrimination are made personal and relatable.
